Yoga
Therapy is a Holistic and therapeutic application of Yoga and
Ayurveda, offering guidance that is specific for you and your individual
needs, and can when appropriate, integrate traditional Yogic and Ayurvedic
concepts and techniques with western medical and psychological knowledge.
It is Yoga with specific focus, and student centered; focusing on their
overall well-being. This approach is distinct from systems of yoga where
the class structure and content are pre-arranged and the student molds
his/herself to the form of yoga being taught.
Yoga
Therapy and Ayurveda aim at the holistic treatments and lifestyle of
various psychological or somatic dysfunctions and special needs that
can range from back problems, Multiple Sclerosis and addictions to asthma
and emotional distress, by focusing on the student's over all well-being,
rather than the dysfunction.
Yoga
Therapy sees the cause of all disease as separation; from source, self
and ultimately from society and the environment.
Joseph
Lepage describes the root of all disease as one of separation; a
lack of awareness of the unity of all things, and connection to our
spiritual source or essence, and sees the role of Yoga Therapy as a
vehicle for the exploration and integration of all aspects of ourselves,
through the art and science of Yoga. There is emphasis on making yoga
accessible to everyone for the greater good and ultimate evolution of
our communities, species and planet".
Krishnamacharya adapted yoga practices based on the abilities of the student, and stressed
the importance of the responsibility of the teacher to the student and
their relationship. His son and student, TKV
Desikechar, carries on this legacy and adds that the ultimate power
of healing has to come from within. The art and science of Yoga Therapy
provides a safe and appropriate structure for learning the technology
of yoga and the spaciousness for the blossoming of the essence of Yoga
to emerge.
